Country 71/196: Switzerland. While her cities are pleasant enough, very few visit Switzerland for the naves of Basel or the clock towers of Bern for it’s the nation’s wild hinterland that draws the crowds for endless fun and games atop Europe’s largest peaks. But if scrambling up Alpine summits isn’t for you, or if you’ve just sold your crampons, the Swiss have got you covered with all methods of lazy mountaineering including the ingenious rack railway line to the observatory-cum-Bond villain lair: Jungfraujoch. Lucerne has a wooden bridge of note and is certainly worth a passing visit while the lofty resort of Zermatt is ideal for the best views of the iconic Matterhorn. Just be sure to bring your own picnic as the town is priced like Monaco on steroids.
