Country 62/196: Serbia. The heart of former Yugoslavia, Serbia still commands a great influence in the region although her deep cultural ties to Russia appear to be hindering her diminishing European ambitions. If baroque-brutalist architecture turns you on, however, Belgrade is certainly the place to go. Night club barges and coffee shop cruisers line the Sava River, the sign of a growing younger subculture, although don’t expect to find a replacement laptop charger anywhere in the country should yours expire. Belgrade Fortress at sunset is a must; visiting in winter is not.
