Country 39/196: Liberia. Sometimes referred to as the United States’ fifty-second state (sorry Puerto Rico), this small corner of Africa provides quite the shock if you’re not aware of its history. With the local accent sounding more The Bronx than West Africa, I found Liberia to be far bigger and brasher than its northerly neighbours. However, two of the most surreal experiences of my entire West African adventure happened on the same Liberian day: sitting in warlord Charles Taylor’s bulletproof jeep and visiting a former 5-star hotel once frequented by the likes of Idi Amin. Only in Liberia.
