Country 85/196: Latvia. From the leafy streets of Riga, with its medieval old town, to the quirky charm of Kuldīga, home to Europe’s widest (but possibly shortest) waterfall, Latvia packs a lot within its relatively small borders. With a thriving craft beer scene, especially in coastal Liepāja, you’ll have plenty of reasons to stay hydrated even on a budget. The capital, Riga, has UNESCO-listed sites coming out of its ears, stunning art nouveau architecture, and a history that includes a bit of everything: Nazis, Soviets, and an impressive independence fight. Whether you’re staring at a giant cow statue in Ventspils or dancing to Latvian Elvis, this country’s blend of history, culture, and fun will leave you wondering why it doesn’t get more attention.
