Country 36/196: Guinea-Bissau. A world away from its bustling neighbours, Guinea-Bissau is one of the hidden gems of Africa. Visited by less than thirty thousand people each year, the country is untouched by touristy developments and culture-sapping big business. The capital, Bissau, is a shabby-yet-charming former Portuguese port city, which provides the gateway to some of the most beautiful and unknown islands on earth: the Bijagós. The locals are welcoming but quiet and you can easily fly under the radar here, which suited me perfectly.
