Country 51/196: France – Guadeloupe. As islands go, this one is an intriguing sort of place—France, but hotter. It’s a full-fledged French department, meaning it’s governed just like Paris, though with considerably fewer Parisians (a notable improvement). The island’s interior is lushly volcanic, full of thick jungles, hidden waterfalls, and winding mountain roads. Its best-known town, at least among Brits, is Deshaies, a quiet fishing village transformed into the picturesque murder capital of the Caribbean by the BBC’s Death in Paradise. Here, bars serve rum punches potent enough to clear sinuses and street corners are invariably occupied by lethargic dogs napping contentedly in the sunshine. It’s delightfully charming and just about as laid-back as France gets.
