Country 96/196: Dominica. Often called the “Nature Island,” Dominica is a rugged, rainforest-covered gem in the eastern Caribbean known for its volcanic peaks, hot springs, and dramatic waterfalls. Unlike many of its neighbours, it lacks sprawling resorts and piña coladas and instead offers dense jungle, black-sand beaches, and a thriving Kalinago community—one of the last indigenous populations in the region. Visitors can explore historic military garrisons, swim beneath icy mountain-fed cascades, and walk through coastal villages untouched by mass tourism. Bring a decent pair of shoes, and be sure to pause at the Ruins Rock Café in Roseau by the port for live music and a hell of an atmosphere.
