Country 28/196: Nicaragua. A nation I very nearly avoided due to the rather dramatic travel warning provided by the wonderful UK government at the time. Despite being advised against all travel in Nicaragua due to civil unrest, I listened to what backpackers were telling me on the ground and it was a good thing I did. Quite possibly my favourite nation in Central America, the volcanic island of Ometepe, as well as the relatively untouched beaches on the Pacific coast, were made all the more special given the fact that I was almost the only tourist in the country. Don’t forget to attempt volcano boarding (just don’t do it hungover).
