Country 27/196: Costa Rica. Ecotourism is a word that every nation wants to be associated with these days, none more than Costa Rica. Whilst their desire to lead the way in sustainable tourism (with a plan to become the first carbon-neutral country by 2021) is most welcomed, it left me with the feeling of being on a very expensive tourist conveyer belt. Similar to an Iceland, everything was a little too slick and lacked the thrill and uncertainty of nearby, less-developed nations. Whilst I still had a superb time and met some fascinating characters, I would highly recommend avoiding the tourist traps in order to get a sense of the real Costa Rica. Pura Vida!
