Country 16/196: Uzbekistan. A true Silk Road destination, Uzbekistan is a one-stop shop for anyone looking to take a step into the past and follow Marco Polo’s iconic route. The infamous cities of Samarkand and Bukhara are filled with countless ornately-decorated, blue-domed mosques, mausoleums and madrassas – all having been painstakingly renovated over the last twenty years. Visas are an annoyance, although they do deter many of the casual visitors – not such a bad thing. Be sure to visit before the inevitable tourist explosion.
