Country 35/196: The Gambia. Africa’s smallest mainland nation: this bizarrely shaped slither should not be avoided when roaming the Western part of the continent. Pristine beaches, an abundance of birdlife and easy links from Dakar make The Gambia a simple and worthwhile destination. Be aware that the locals can be extremely pushy, and I was followed by swindlers on many an occasion – be on your toes around the ‘tourist’ spots. Otherwise, relax and enjoy this idyllic ‘Second Jamaica’.
