Country 12/196: Mongolia. When we began the planning phase of our Silk Road voyage (yes, we did plan), two particular legs appeared more challenging than the rest: the Pamir Highway and Western Mongolia. Just how challenging they would be, we could not begin to imagine. Helping us to ford vast rivers and to survive catastrophic punctures on the Steppe were the locals, as welcoming and supportive as any I have come across. However, get there fast, before highways and transport links make the journey across this epic nation a breeze. As of right now, it is anything but.
