Country 30/196: El Salvador. A nation often overlooked by the casual Central American backpacker, despite the fact that I found it to be the cheapest and most welcoming of all. The towns and beaches along the Pacific coast are havens for hardcore surfers (or hardcore readers like myself) whilst the lakes and volcanoes that dot the countryside are just as impressive as any others in the region – just without the throngs of tourists getting in the way. Avoid the capital and the remainder of El Salvador is littered with undiscovered gems – bypass it at you’re missing out my friends.
