Country 49/196: Cabo Verde. This ten-island archipelago lies approximately five hundred kilometres west of the African mainland; and that is about all it has in common with its continental neighbours. Portugal kept a strong grip on the nation until independence was gained in 1975, whilst tourism has emerged as a major driver behind its recent growth. Each island offers something slightly different: from hiking paradises in the northern islands, to package holiday havens in Sal, to volcano hunting in Fogo; you cannot fail to find something you enjoy. Unless you enjoy Grimsby, then there is no hope.
